Cover Letter: I believe the most effective way to combat addiction is rehabilitation. Rehab is proven to work most effectively because in rehabilitation centers or programs they are able to restore a person's mental health through therapy and training over time. When dealing with addiction and mental illnesses we should not substitute drugs for different drugs. We need to create an extremely peaceful environment with many different things to do, we need to transfer that addiction by creating creative outlets for the patients to put their energy into. We need to support them because addiction is a huge issue that many in our world struggle with and most just desire support from friends and family. We need to eliminate their toxic relationship to a drug and get them to exercise, or cook, or create art, there are loads of activities that can help. We just need to spend more of our money on rehabilitation centers instead of prisons. We throw addicts into jails and prisons to get them sober but this hasn’t worked so why do we keep putting humans in cages when we know whatever we are trying to do wont work. Without support and helping them realize that they can be happy without the drug nothing will change. In order to shift our country's addiction problem we need less prisons and more rehabilitation centers, more support and less hate, and most of all comfortable environments so patients are willing to change their bad habit.
Reflection: This unit was very eventful. We learned about a variety of drugs, what they do to your mind/body, and ways to combat addiction if it gets this bad. I'm glad we learned about this because I can use it in real life with friends and family members battling addiction. This unit was somewhat challenging but overall I am proud of myself and the work I produced in this unit. I enjoy the portfolio system and believe it is one of the best ways of grading one on their own progress and work throughout the unit. After the first unit quiz my level of mastery was about 1-2 I understood what parts of the brain controls what but not very well. I want to have my level of mastery at 5 so I can truly understand the brain structure and its functions. I am proud of the work I produce, so far I am putting in my best effort. Next unit I am going to try and be on time and in class just about everyday. My biggest area of growth in this unit has been collaboration. I have collaborated with many of my peers to gather notes and assignments that I have to finish. I have realized that I work best whenever I want to work best whether it is in groups, alone, in loud environments or quiet ones I have learned that the best way for me to learn is to just do it. I was gone for about half of this unit, my peers especially have helped me with notes, and assignments, while also using your DP I was able to keep track of my work and do assignments I didn’t know we were doing. I believe I deserve an A for effort because even though I could not always make it to class I always got notes/assignments, checked the DP, and stayed caught up with just about all of my work. I also deserve an A for growth because I have grown tremendously, I challenge myself when doing assignments and help others with the class such as Lucy. I learned a lot about “The Hive Switch” and how drugs affect the mind and body. I deserve a B for mastery because I could have gone further with my knowledge and understanding of topics when working on assignments. I don’t feel like I quite mastered the unit objective. I would give myself a B also for communication because when I couldn’t make it to class I asked my peers about what we did and got notes from many people to compile and make my own notes. I deserve an A for reflection because I was openly honest about my tardiness and what I did to change the outcome of my grade.
