Problem Statement: If The HIV test is 99.9% correct specific and 99.5% correct sensitive and for his specific demographic the rate of infection is 1 in 10,000. His doctor informs him that there is a 1/1000 chance he is not infected and will survive. I am to figure out how the mathematician who tested positive for HIV calculated the probability that he has HIV and the probability that he is not sick at all.
Process: I started this problem by taking a look at the hints we were given to get an idea of how to begin my table. I had to make a table calculating being healthy testing negative, being healthy testing positive, being unhealthy testing negative, and being unhealthy testing positive. Once I figured out how to set up my table I then plugged in all the numbers. To get to my final answer I took the number of people who tested positive and divided it by the total.
